"As long as you're not hurting anyone, that's okay."
We often hear this advice (or something we use personally) without realizing that it is actually a very dangerous perception. Just because we didn't physically or emotionally harm anyone doesn't mean it justifies our actions.
We often hear this advice (or something we use personally) without realizing that it is actually a very dangerous perception. Just because we didn't physically or emotionally harm anyone doesn't mean it justifies our actions.
A few concrete examples would be: excessive drinking, addiction to pornography (and, therefore, masturbation), pre-marital sex and the list goes on.
We tend to forget that we also need to be accountable for our own souls. It's not enough that we "don't hurt anybody"—we need to properly assess if what we're doing is actually deeply hurting ourselves.
For now, we may be trying to satiate desires however we want and without thinking of the future conseqences. But for once in our lives have we ever stopped to think, "is this all there is?" or "will this grant me lasting joy?" or even, "will this truly bring me peace?"
Letting go of instant pleasures is tough but may we never for a second choose fleeting gratification over what's worth it in the long run.
