#medtwitter #sundaymotivation After a weekend of studying, I needed to hit the reset button on why I do what I do. I am not in this field for a paycheck, or for the prestige. I’m not in it for the nod from the person behind me at the coffee shop when they read my sweatshirt.

1/
I’m in this field to keep the familiar privilege of holding a patient’s hand at their most vulnerable, when they’ve asked me “am I going to die?” And the only answer I could give, “probably. We’ve done all we can. Now we will do our best to keep you comfortable. I’m sorry.”

2/
For the intubated patient who can’t breathe on their own, is fully conscious but can’t move, who looks up with thanks in their eyes when I’ve spent 30 mins repositioning them. The silent thank you.

3/
I’m here for the aging patient who, like my parents, worked countless hours to put food on the table and keep clothes on their children’s back, and now it’s their turn to be cared for.

4/
I’m here to sit for an hour with the person with alcoholism (my same age) back in the unit again, whom everyone else has given up on, and after the 11th detox finally tells me he’s never gotten over the death of his best friend...his dad.

5/
I’m here to keep the privilege of being trusted to watch over loved ones, so that the family who hasn’t left the bedside in 4 days straight can finally go to get some sleep. Because our team has worked to gain that trust.

6/
#Nursing school, the greatest preceptors in the entire world, my patients day in and day out have taught me so much about what it means to be trusted. The burdens and privileges of this “job.” This calling of #Healthcare .

7/
Honestly, #PASchool brings out the absolute best in me, and sometimes, the worst. Every so often, this is the reset and refresh that I need. To remember why I do what I do. To light the fire again.

8/
I walk this path so that the next time Death appears on the unit and wants someone before their time, I get to stand in between them and say, quietly enough that only He and I can hear, “not today.”

Not today.

Now back to work.
Entirely out of my comfort zone to share this but have gotten great inspiration lately to just be honest, especially reading @RyanMarino @medicalaxioms @MKIttlesonMD @londyloo and of course motivation to persevere from @jockowillink
