#Pune Visited Appa Balwant Chowk area after a long time. Located in Budhwar Peth, off Laxmi Rd...near Shaniwarwada.

For decades, this has been the books (especially academic) and stationery hub of Pune.

There are stores here which date back over 50, 100...even 150 years!

The Appa Balwant Chowk area looks a bit different, compared to what it did in the 1990s and earlier...as many old Wadas have given way to modern buildings. Many of the old stores though have still remained - having relocated to the new buildings.

The original 'Appa Balwant Chowk' area is named after Appa Balwant Mehendale, a Sardar of the Peshwas.

The 'Tambdi Jogeshwari' temple, which goes back many centuries is also located in this area.

During our school and college days in the 1980s and early 90s ...a regular visit here was a must - to buy books and stationery.

And sometimes to look for other books as well (there were a few stores that had good collections of Marathi and English fiction/nonfiction books)

Quite possibly the oldest book store in #Pune is located right here, in a modern building (which replaced the old Wada here recently).

This store, run by the Godboles, dates back to 1858!

Another old (not sure exactly how old..) store nearby is an exclusive Sanskrit book store.

(The shop is small - but the owner mentioned that they would be happy to find and procure other Sanskrit books that they may not have...and even ship those).
