In light of the rumors of a potential lock down I wish to share some ways I (a person of limited funds stock up) will this help everyone? Maybe not but so many of us on here have families to feed and this may help some of you make things stretch.
First off never be surprised how many kid friendly snacks you can make yourself. From cheap flavored ice treats with a bit of drink mix and a freezer. To buying a couple of boxes of store brand complete pancake mix (1.65 at most stores) to make doughnuts and other treats.
Shop smart you don't need named brand stuff to make it taste good. A lot of folks will turn their nose up at the cheaper store brands thinking that a name means better quality. It doesnt and you are burning money.
Many stores sell bags of frozen vegetables for under a dollar. To me they taste better than canned but I get a couple of canned veggies to just in case of a power outage. I had invested three years ago in an extra freezer and keep bags of frozen veggies for soups and sides.
Pasta is cheap and a versatile stock item. If you have the veggies I mentioned above and some butter or even cooking spread (cheaper) you can season up some pasta with veggies. And most store brand tomato sauces are very cheap.
I tend to buy Flour and Sugar by the 4 and 5 lb bags they hardly go over 1.50 at most in store brand you can make several things including flat breads with these basic ingredients and most seasonings are under 99 cents to.
The stores I found with the best selections of cheap store brands are: Kroger, Food Lion, Walmart, and especially Aldis. I have gone into Aldis with twenty dollars (all I had at the time) and came out with a lot of stock up essentials. They even have bread on sales .50 a loaf!
The dollar store is another source of quick cheap stock up you can get soups, soup cubes (which stretch your food and can be used as seasonings) And the one in my area has a dairy case for eggs and the like.
Oatmeal is such good stock staple for a house with kids period. I keep my house full of oatmeal because its cheaper than box cereal and it can be made in small or large batches.
Canned milk is still very cheap as well folks should be looking at getting a few cans of this along with beans such as black, kidney and dried bags of black eyed peas. And most bags of rice sell for 5lbs for 2 dollars or less.
Trust me I have been budget shopping for years now. I strategically buy because I never know when money will be tight. If you are in this boat trust me I understand and anyone else who wants to add to this thread feel free.
