THREAD ALERT: Today, @SenateCommerce will hold a hearing at 2:30pmET to consider the nomination of Nancy Beck as chair of the Consumer Product Safety Commission ( @USCPSC), regulating 15,000+ products. Her confirmation would be a disaster for public health & safety. #BadNewsBeck
Beck is a toxicologist, yes. Early on in her career, her policy ideas on how to standardize risk assessment at the White House were criticized by many in the scientific community, including the National Research Council for being "fundamentally flawed" #BadNewsBeck
At the chemical industry trade org, the American Chemistry Council, Beck worked to unfairly question the rigor of @EPA's chemical program, pushed for weaker standards on harmful chemicals like TCE and silica, & advocated for the restriction of independent science #BadNewsBeck
Then the ethically-challenged former @EPA administrator, Scott Pruitt, used a Safe Drinking Water Act loophole to get Nancy Beck into a powerful position without proper ethics checks. In her time at @EPAChemSafety, Beck has worked diligently to bend the Lautenberg TSCA amendments to industry's will, botching processes that have led to chemical evaluations that in no way represent the science (asbestos, TCE, methylene chloride, & more) #BadNewsBeck
