Reflecting on a zoom meeting I was in earlier. A young black woman shares a some questions that she spent the time to put together for workshop. We all listen and answer the questions. That are in relation to diversity/inclusivity in the work place. Great questions....
They make everyone think in one way or another. I imagine all the black and Asian people in the meeting can totally identify and the white people (generally) has not had to think about these things very much (if at all). At the end of her section, the chat fills up with....
Can we share and use the questions? I have to cut my camera so I can roll my eyes! I breathe and write in the chat... employ/book/commission this young black woman to come to YOUR organisation to deliver the workshop with YOUR mostly (if not all) WHITE TEAMS.....
Well I wrote the ‘politically correct’ version in the chat. And there my friends is a BIG part of the inequality Black people face. YOU want to take the questions to share with your friends and colleagues WITHOUT understanding the nuances of what it means to be Black......
With NO lived experience of this because honestly you never will. So, her is a suggestion PASS THE MIC! It baffles me how many white Diversity and Inclusion officers etc I see. Now let me say I am not trying to come for anyone’s job. But it just baffles me how white people with.
No loved experience of this can take these positions. Again I am not coming for anyone’s job. But let me ask you this... how do you enable the voices of the people who should be heard into your white spaces??? Go see you sharing your resources with Black people who are the BEST
People to speak to educate etc your teams. These conversations on race have been going on for YEARS, it is exhausting. Pass the mic 🎤 let’s here from those who actually know what it is to be discriminated against. It’s so simple I can’t understand why we need all these meetings.
If you want different results you have to CHANGE YOUR PROCESS. How do you recruit? Where do you advertise? Who are on your panels? It’s not enough to have Black people fill your SKILLED roles as cleaners, cooks etc but your LEADERSHIP teams are just people that look, think, eat,
Socialise etc like you. Nothing will change. Please take a look at your systems and processes. They are not working. Not if you REALLY want change. Every zoom session I have gone to about this issue has people from various organisations I have has these conversations with...
And it baffles me because I think are you just here to be SEEN to be here?? Because 5/6/7 years ago you all invited me to various conversations (unpaid) and today there has been NO CHANGE in what you and your organisation do to really be diverse and inclusive.
Be the change you want to see or stop taking up space with your ‘performative allyship’... to me it’s so simple. If you believe in something/someone you show up and do the work. If not stop taking up space, tell us you don’t really want to change and keep it moving. The end.
