In the Lutheran tradition, certain worship practices are adiaphora (things indifferent). They are UNTIL the state authority says that you must do them--THEN they are not something indifferent, but something to be resisted. The moment of crisis requires confession of the truth.
In a similar way, when there is no crisis or controversy, we would all affirm that every life and all lives matter. But once there is a crisis, once a certain set of lives is placed at risk, at that point, we must say clearly that those particular lives matter.
In this moment of crisis in our history, our black brothers and sisters need us to say clearly, unequivocally, and without hesitation that black lives matter. But more than matter: they are valued, needed, and loved by a God who made them beautiful.
On this #JuneteenthDay I want to clearly say that black lives matter. One step we can take to demonstrate that fact is to make this day a federal holiday--so that we always remember as a national people that this is true.
