AB1460 HAS FINALLY BEEN PASSED!

AB1460 is a bill that makes a 3 unit ethnic studies course a requirement for graduates in the 2024-2025 school year at ALL 23 CSU CAMPSUES 🥳 making it the largest higher education system in the US to have this requirement
“But we already have section F at CSUN. How is this different?”

Section F is competitive cultural studies, NOT ethnic studies. while ethnic studies is offered in the section, it doesn’t stand on its own as a requirement. You can fulfill section F with a language class, for ex.
Standing alone rather than having to be grouped with other subjects will hopefully give ethnic studies departments the funding they deserve.

Look at the difference between the science buildings and Jerrome Richfield Hall. Which has better resources for staff?
Ethnic studies is the only discipline that comes out of social justice struggles.

Yes, at CSUN you may have taken a Chicano or Africana studies speech course, but did you actually learn enough about their movements? Or just snippets here and there while crafting speeches?
For this to be a requirement at CSUs with a smaller population of students of color, such as Cal Poly SLO, this is huge! And we all know how ethnic studies is important to know for people of *all disciplines*
While we should celebrate this historic decision, there is work to be done.

ALL 23 CSU Presidents plus CSU ChaNcELLoR T*mothy Wh*te sent a letter to the CA Senate in opposition of the bill
CA Senators who voted NO:

Andreas Borgeas, 8th district (Fresno State and CSU Stanisnlaus in this distr)

Shannon Grove, 16th district (CSU Bakersfield in distr)

Brian Jones, 38th district (SDSU In distr)

Melissa Melendez, 28th district

Mike Morell, 23rd district, (CSUSB)
