Platform fighters are special because of
The vast amount of movement options and mixups that are available. A character being designed to lock themselves down to one spot and use slow projectiles does not fit the bill of a platform fighter character due to the movement options available to the cast of characters.
As a stationary zoner, Zelda is very predictable as to where and when she will use her projectiles, and, regardless of how random a certain use of a projectile is, the opponent can always react and counter Zelda with a hit unless they are in disadvantage.
Because of this fact, Zelda being a stationary zoner does not function as intended. So, why not just use her melee attacks instead? Zelda is a balanced character, she has strong projectiles and a decent neutral when played patiently. Therefore, her normals
Are not as effective as many other characters in the game due to drastically unsafe moves, long points of lag, and lack of disjoints besides up air, f tilt, and f smash. Even then, these disjoints are mediocre at best, as they are basically all attached to Zeldas hurtbox
Besides up air, which is slow and laggy. Zelda very clearly has good tools, such as dash attack and sweet spot lightning kick, but these are very commital. Zelda is also very slow both on the ground and in the air, so her mobility is also very lacking when compared to many other
Characters. So, Zelda is outclassed when she camps due to movement and is also outclassed when she uses her normals to attack due to lack of safe options and disjoints . How does she win then?
Like many zoners, Zelda thrives off of fear and frustration. She has a very strong, albeit commital advantage state and has the ability to consistently end stock at under 100%, commonly even killing at percents closer to 50 or 60.
Zelda thrives off of reads and reactions to win neutral and end stocks early. However, due to her slow nature, Zelda also suffers from having defensive options read. This fact is not helped by her disadvantage being absolutely terrible.
So, is Zelda good?
In my opinion, yes, Zelda is still solidly mid tier, nearly high tier. However, she is held back by fundamental flaws and design errors that, not only make her frustrating to play, but also frustrating to fight because of how she is “compensated” for her
