Do you know what makes this idea truly good? That it would happen in a city rather than the fucking woods or on a farm in a place where most trans women have never been and don’t want to go because the country is ISOLATED. It would have to happen in full public view. https://twitter.com/theauntifa/status/1274097592574652428
I have so much respect for what Camp Trans was during the intermittent good years when it was focused and led by trans women. As a protest it’s an action that’s scorched into my mind. The persistence and work it took! But it had limitations like anything,
And one that we were talking about in 2008 was stuff like how lack of plumbing, and only having one chemical toilet, and being in the woods of Michigan were all keeping people from sharing the experience. It was crucial to the project as a protest but worked against the rest.
While it was exciting to be part of it at all, ever, in any way, there was this... phenomenon happening there that I never really stopped thinking about for long. It was what happens when you are suddenly *immersed* in your own kind maybe for the first or only time.
You can’t get that in a forum or a dinner party. Trans women don’t own much of anything, we don’t have clubs, or bars, or a cafe. IME what we mostly have is each other, and kitchen tables we gather around. This is even more true in cities, where most of us live.
I’m not advocating for separatism and part of the reason for that is “look where it got 70s lesbians with ‘women’s land.’” It’s just not something I can call a strategy. But being around each other as much as possible *is* a strategy and one that we *should* embrace more.
