Marketing 101, Entrepreneur Advice, & Seagull Theory from @noahkagan

[Thread]
*Background

∙Before founding his first company, Noah was employee #30 at Facebook, and employee #4 at http://mint.com

∙Between his companies http://appsumo.com , SendFox, and Okdork he's started two multi-million dollar companies and grown a 700,000+ email list
Marketing 101 Tips

∙Have a singular goal in the beginning, and stay laser focused on it

It's tough to do Insta, Twitter, TikTok, etc. all at once
∙Understand who your core audience is and market to them

Noah realized with his content biz Okdork that his core audience is 25-40 year olds who want to start a company, but haven't figured it out or are too afraid to try
∙What are your core messages that people will know you for?

Noah's are:
∙ Behind the scenes access to his 8 figure company
∙ How to start a $1M company over a weekend (which he did)
∙ Challenges to help readers overcome fear: ask for 10% off the next cup of coffee you buy
The more unique your core messages are, the more value you can provide
∙Lastly, what's your unique promotion strategy?

Noah promotes his work to his audience through social media, & after seeing what they like based on the engagement, he'll do a podcast interview, youtube vid, blog post, etc. on the topic
Advice to Entrepreneur's Just Starting Out

∙If you're having trouble figuring out a business to start, then start a newsletter (using SendFox of course) or a YouTube channel

∙Whichever one you choose, center it around whatever ideas/areas of business you're interested in
The idea is that you'll learn a lot more by being actively involved in that area/industry, versus just passively observing from the outside

@ShaanVP calls this "being in the eye of the storm"
∙ Connect with people aggressively

Ask people that you already know if they know anyone that's smart/famous.

∙ Reach out to those people - put on events, organize lunches, etc.

This is how Noah met @tferriss, @ramit, etc.
∙Find someone who's 15-20 years older than you are, and is exactly where you want to be in life at that age (career wise, family, etc.)

∙Find a way to get that person to give a 💩 about you - the best way to do this is to do things for them that provide value
Noah said every person he has hired has added something of value to him for free and without him asking for it.

Provide value to others, and you will earn something in return
Management Advice

∙Don't be a seagull!

A seagull is the boss who comes in, takes a sh*t on everything, and then just flys away

∙Being a seagull will demotivate your employees, which is the last thing you want to happen
