In short, statues have sat in front of our buildings as Wisconsin has become the most segregated state in the country and as injustices have occurred time and time again. “Forward” has been only for white Wisconsinites and the truth of that may be a hard pill to swallow. 1/
This is on the Legislature. They’ve done exactly nothing to alleviate the hurt and the struggle of Black Wisconsinites. There is great audacity in defending the Forward statue as they firmly plant their heads in the sand and refuse to move us forward. 2/
We have spent 401 years doing it their way and look where we’re at. People are justifiably wanting to bring down hollow messages that were never meant to symbolize them. Instead of mourning the replica of a statue, let’s mourn the disparate gaps in educational achievement. 3/
Let’s mourn the black maternal death rate. Let’s mourn the wealth gap. Let’s mourn the disparate rates of home ownership among black families. There is much more to be upset about than metal. 4/
