can you imagine having the audacity to just have random kids walk by and announce the themes of the show 5 minutes in to episode 1

alright, that's a wrap on ep1 — still an absolute masterclass in music, direction (so many striking, dynamic, and expressive shots), and writing (a fun balance of comedy, tragedy, and anime absurdity — and toooons of foreshadowing)
I'm excited for other episodes to be much less rich/dense, so I can actually get through them without pausing to think every 5 seconds.

(but I'm not quite prepared for several episodes of Ringo-seducing-her-teacher shenanigans)

(like everything else, this hits much harder after reading about the psychology behind the people who joined the aum cult)
this is fucking haunting after reading accounts of the orders the perpetrators received

(also, nothing is a coincidence)
if I had a nickel for every time I heard that...
"what kind of show is Penguindrum?"
even when I rewatched the show 2 years ago, I thought there was only a little bit of foreshadowing to the gas attack

but, no, after reading Murakami's Underground, the show even from episode 1 is drenched in moments like this extremely ominous "what's that curry smell?" bit
one of the details that comes through in Murakami's interviews is that, even though sarin is supposedly odorless, everyone described a very strong, distinct smell — and everyone described that smell differently.
