A while back, I let my NPPA membership lapse. I respect the organization and the people who work for it, but at the time it felt outdated, catering to newspaper staffs rather than freelancers. (1/?)
I recently renewed my membership because I was impressed by the NPPA's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It felt like the needs of independent photographers were being listened to, and I wanted to support that. (2/?)
Since I rejoined, they partnered with several other groups to debut @photo_rights, which I think is HUGE for a legacy organization like NPPA. It shows a commitment to social justice and fair treatment of photographers. It's an acknowledgement that we can make a change. (3/?)
I don't see how you can look at the current state of journalism and think, "I wouldn't change a thing."
@photo_rights strikes me as forward thinking, a living document that acknowledges the need for change while still respecting the tenets of the profession. (4/?)

That being said, I am now proud to call myself an NPPA member and I commend all of the hard work they've put into this.
And finally because someone will say something, I'm referring to social justice within the lens-based community. We need equity now. (end thread!)
