[THREAD} on reaching 30 days sober and 3 benefits I feel

Today, I've reached 30 straight days without a drink of alcohol

I've noticed a few benefits from it, so read on to learn about them!

(1/10)
1) Clearer mind

Every time I take a break from drinking, my mind clears up around day 10 - 14

It's an incredible difference - any brain fog I have completely disappears

I can also focus on things for much longer than when I'm drinking regularly

(2/10)
2) Less anxiety

I've struggled with anxiety off and on for my entire life

As I've mentioned, it's been particularly bad since last January

But after quitting alcohol and caffeine, my anxiety has vanished

Why is this?

(3/10)
Alcohol is a nervous system depressant

When you drink a lot, your system's baseline becomes depressed

So your body counteracts this by making your system's baseline more excited

When the alcohol wears off, the overexcited system makes you anxious & jittery

(4/10)
Also, alcohol mimics a neurotransmitter called GABA

GABA reduces the anxiety and nervousness you feel

That's why people drink to relax

But when your brain gets too much "GABA", it increases the GABA receptors

That's why people build a tolerance to alcohol

(5/10)
If you quit alcohol cold turkey, there's a large imbalance in

∙the GABA receptors in your brain
∙and the actual amount of GABA molecules in your brain

This makes you feel anxious & nervous

People often feel so bad they think they have no choice but to keep drinking

(6/10)
3) More self-respect

Alcohol abuse is something I've battled with for years

I've always had a very high tolerance to it, and I keep control of myself when I drink

So, I didn't think about the consequences for my body and mind until lately

(7/10)
Because I didn't see any obvious consequences for drinking a lot

I just did it without thinking too much about it

Now that I've quit, I feel something I haven't much felt in years...

Self-respect and pride

(8/10)
I've decided that I won't take another drink until December

I want to see what other benefits there are in taking a longer break

Plus, alcohol has calories... Not a great thing when you're working on losing weight

Til then, I'll enjoy my sparkling water
