There is a part in Duaa Kumayl which says, لأي الأمور اليك أشكو ولما منها" أضج وأبكي". (For which things would I complain to You? And for which of them would I lament and weep?)

"لاليم العذاب وشدته أم لطول البلاء ومدته"
(For the pain and severity of chastisement? Or for the length of the period of tribulation?) which tells us that the first phrase is actually pointing out our suffering in the next life.

What makes that phrase even more special is what follows it: It is followed by asking how one would be able to tolerate being distanced from Allah.
"فهبني يا إِلهي وسيدي ومولاي وربي صبرت على عذابك فكيف أصبر على فراقك؟ وهبني صبرت على حر نارك فكيف أصبر عن النظر إِلى كرامتك"

It is saying: I can tolerate Hellfire, but I cannot bear to be pushed away from You. It is a phrase completely stripped of every ounce of ego.

True suffering isn't the punishment itself, but what lies behind it: Allah's anger and dissatisfaction with us. The punishment is not the result of His anger, the punishment IS His anger and distancing from us.
