If you get into an accident on the road and you’re hounded by random strangers trying to tow your car, DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THEM. Tell them you’ve already called your insurance company and you’re being sorted out. But that’s still not the end of it:
1) Call your insurance company, give them your details and ASK THEM to provide you with the tow car number and the company they’re sending to tow your car. Take pictures of your car and the area you’re in. Take as many as you can to verify the damage. Collect all your valuables.
2) Call your car make hotline and ask them for the nearest official car repair centre for your car make and ask them if you’re covered by insurance. Also ask for the contact number of anyone who works at Accident Claims from the repair centre.
3) Call your insurance provider again and tell them you want to tow your car to the repair centre you received confirmation for. Ask them AGAIN to give you the details of the tow truck that THE INSURANCE COMPANY IS sending. This is mega important. Take note of the driver’s name.
3.1) Again, these conmen will be hounding you to tow with them. The worst part is, they’re all interconnected.

When your tow truck does arrive, MAKE SURE you’re signing with the tow truck company that the INSURANCE COMPANY sent. Check the name of the company on the receipt.
3.2) even if you accidentally sign any documents with any of these conmen, ASK them to tear up the original document and insist on having the insurance company sort you out. Don’t listen to their usual “semua sama jer” nonsense. You could lose your insurance claim like this.
4) You will be led to the police station to make a report. Tell the officer who’s taking your statement in detail about what happened. Review the report a few times to make sure you have everything covered.
5) If your accident didn’t involve another vehicle and there is no damage to public property, YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO PAY A SUMMONS. Once the police photographers take pictures of your car, make sure that your car is being sent to the car repair centre you contacted earlier.
6) Check with the repair centre to get all the documents you need to claim insurance. I’ll drop a list of things you’ll need below which should be the standard for all insurance claims. It’s the age of the internet, so a PDF scanner on your phone will be REALLY handy here.
7) If everything adds up, you’ll be covered and then you’ll just wait for your car to be repaired. This is how you go about an accident on the road. Don’t fall for ANYONE who walks to you and offers you services unofficially.
Finally, I know it’s really difficult to stay calm during an accident but I hope that this thread gives you a little clarity on how the claims process is run from start to finish. Drive safe!
It was an interesting morning but I’m fine! Not a scratch on me, thank God!
