Most not if all K-pop labels have been conducting their pressers online - receiving Qs from journos by email in advance. While this might be inevitable atm bc of COVID, journalism is almost rendered useless now that labels have full power to weed out unwanted Qs.
K-pop labels already have so much control over their artists and info about them bc everything - from forming a grp to promo - is done in-house. Dealing w K-pop labels is not easy bc they demand every. single. question. in advance prior to iv which is against AP editorial policy.
We play it fair. I give them broad talking points so they can prep in advance. 3/4 of my job involves convincing them to interview w us and explaining why i can't give them every single Q in advance (journalism, duh). Now, they can weed out any unwanted Q for their online presser
Ppl here have been talking about how absurd the Factory Girls story from the New Yorker is and how it didn't age well. I'm surprised that some K-pop journos are saying this bc i mean have you tried to interview K-pop bands w/o giving them specific Qs? many occasions of silence
Not denying that some K-pop stars do voice out and act on their own accord but only a few. Also the way they are groomed didn't change much from the past - rigorous training and full control by labels over their look, image, music, cell phone, dating, etc. etc.
I respect your love for K-pop and I'm sure as a fan there is this subconscious desire to present K-pop in positive light bc it's been misunderstood and stereotyped way toooooo long. But completely disregarding and denying the factory girls narrative is not completely accurate
Going back to my first tweet- good luck to me cutting bites from online presser w questions like "why do you think the world loves your music sooooooo much." It is loved. I already know it. Now give me something more interesting. Some vulnerability. Details most ppl don't know

And the funny thing is. I can be relatively honest? about these bc i'm a POC WOC journo and for that im in no way getting an exclusive w BTS even tho i work for a western media lol
