Bhartṛhari, once the king of Ujjayini, later renouncing the world & installed as king his younger brother Vikramaditya, the promoter of Vikramaswat, is credited with writing this trio.

It is believed that when King Bhartṛhari was immersed in indulgence & luxury, he composed the ShringarShatak, Later, when he realized his duties of a king, he composed the NitiShatak, and finally when he got restless & renounced the world he Created VairagyShatak.

Do not insult those men of wisdom who have attained the Supreme Knowledge! The material wealth is as worthless as a piece of grass for them. Just as an intoxicated elephant cannot be controlled with lotus petals, similarly it is impossible to subdue the learned for wealth.

This verse signifies that, We did not enjoy the subjects, the subjects made us suffer. We did not meditate, tenacity only made us meditated. Time hasn't spent, we have spent, Our craving did not wane, we were weakened.

Well, there may be some differences on the existence of Bhrithari on his time period, but there is no doubt that he was a great king as well as a great philosopher & poet whose compositions are meaningful even in the present day & will guide us for generations to come.
Our literary heritage is not limited to the Ved & Purana alone, but there have been many great philosophers, whose compositions have not been recognized everywhere, we need to find & study them.
