I just watched one of my drum corps videos from 20 years ago and had to explain to my husband why going on the road for 9 weeks with $40 and a roll of quarters, and sleeping on gym floors was fun. 😂
Doing dumb things because someone told me I couldn’t do it since ‘99!
I started out in band playing the oboe, and then learned tuba because we needed more of them. I played sousaphone in marching band, and when I learned about drum corps knew I wanted to play contra bass bugle, and everyone told me it would be too hard. It sucked. But I LOVED IT.
When I eventually joined the Army as an oboist, they tried to give me cymbals for ceremonies because in America we don’t march with double reed instruments. I said no thanks, and grabbed a sousaphone, and it literally was my ticket around the world.
