As promised, my Top 10 Moments in Titanic Rising by Weyes Blood. This is one of my favourite albums ever and it was so hard to narrow it down to just 10 but I think these just about sum up what makes it so great
1:54 of this song is the exact moment I fell in love with this album. I wasn't expecting much going in so I was really only half paying attention, but the second that gorgeous chord change hit, I knew I had something special on my hands
I love the lyrical progression of this song. It's a tale of love conquering self-doubt and despair, and each chorus reflects her increasingly hopeful state of mind. But it's this last one where she fully, gloriously embraces her feelings, complete with some extra slide guitar
A poignant verse that paints the process of searching for true love as arduous and often disappointing, followed by a chorus reminding us that while it may be hard, love is fundamental and worth looking for. Lots of great, diverse instrumentation going on here too
One of the many things this album does right is its use of build ups and payoffs. This song is a prime example: it starts off with just voice and piano and by the end, it swells to a whole symphony, led by a glorious vocal performance
One of those songs where every second of it could be a top 10 moment, but I've settled on 2. First: a couple mins in, a whole new, more intense melody is introduced. Before, she was idly longing but now we hear her need for meaning stronger, presaging the climax to come
After a sudden switch up, the song takes off. Synths bubble, violins whirl, and Mering's vocals soar to the heavens. After countless listens, I'm still never prepared for this performance. She pushes her voice and emotions to the brink and makes it seem effortless
This verse has some of my favourite lyrics on the album. The sentiment is simple but powerful: you can't change your experiences, so you might as well learn from them. It's a common theme throughout the whole album, but it's articulated so succinctly and beautifully here
Even though there's still 2 songs left, his really feels like the climax of the album. Mering's gorgeous vocals and the sea of instruments swirling together, building to a final passage where she puts her love against a chaotic world and sighs, "It's a wild time to be alive"
This verse just tears my heart out. The lyrics are beautifully sad and her high note in the "big suit of armour" line is one of my absolute favourite vocal performances. I'm tearing up just thinking about it
And then after that soul-crushing moment of grief, the album's opening melody, with all its bittersweet connotations, brings us full circle, instantly lifting that weight. Throughout the album, we've had to reckon with some heavy themes, but it all ends with a glimmer of hope
So there you have it, my top 10 Titanic Rising Moments. Thanks so much for reading this far, it was a lot of fun to make. I might have to do this more often!
