People who say “I don’t care if you’re white, black, or yellow!” bitch don’t call me yellow. it’s a slur.
why do you feel the need to define me by the hues of my skin? The Asian experience is much more than having yellow undertones. We shouldn’t have to conform to western ideas of race.
HOWEVER, I still sometimes use yellow to refer to myself and other people of East Asian decent. It has a long history rooted in xenophobia and racism. I just really don’t think non-Asian people should be using a word that was weaponized against us. “Yellow peril” is still real
A great article about the use of yellow as an identifier/slur, as well as some history on Yellow Peril: https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2018/09/27/647989652/if-we-called-ourselves-yellow
TLDR; don’t call Asian people yellow if you aren’t Asian. it’s racist and lazy. Thanks
And if you argue “well then why can we call Black people Black but not Asian people yellow” these are not equal comparisons. Black as an identity has such a unique and long history. It is much more than just color: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/06/time-to-capitalize-blackand-white/613159/
