I have this habit of reading @AAMCtoday reports when I'm bored🤷‍♀️Today, I wanted to look more at race and debt for medical students.

I know I'm a nerd, but here's a quick thread for your Sunday evening.

#MedEd
We know that most medical students come from a solid economic background. The 2018 AAMC Analysis in Brief found that 3/4 of medical students come from the upper top two household income quintiles and this hasn't changed in 30 years!

We also know that debt and poverty are not equally shared across the races*

*thank systemic racism and white supremacy for that

Let's zoom in on med students:

A majority of med school grads have no premed education debt, but Black (40%), Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (34%), AIAN (30%), and Hispanic/Latino (23%) grads have $25,000 or more in non-medical school educational debt.
"Compared with their peers, Black or African American (31%), Hispanic or Latino (29%), and Asian (16%) matriculants are more likely to have parents with a combined gross income under $50,000."
Everyone says that medical school is a good investment, but it is hard to make the upfront costs when debt and poverty hang over you.

Part of recruitment has to include strong financial packages, especially for Black students.
