There are financial issues. Locking a vandal up doesn’t pay to repair or replace the statue. It takes a taxpayer out of the workforce instead of them paying for damages. It burdens the taxpayer for appx. $32k a year for warehousing the vandal.....
There are societal issues. Every day they are locked up, a child goes w/o one of their parents, putting that child at risk. The family may also struggle financially, and again cost taxpayers money for welfare assistance. The remaining spouse may require childcare so they can work
Politicians throw around “years” the way they throw around “billions of taxpayer dollars”. Just imagine your college-aged child going to prison for 10 years of their life. They could miss out on so much. Marriage, children, education, career, family gatherings, family funerals..
On release, the world has changed. Their friends have drifted away, they have difficulties finding work, housing, social relationships. They may suffer from the emotional stress they experienced behind bars....
While inside the prison, they are at risk. Viruses, fighting, poor healthcare, poor food, poor rehabilitation programs. Freedoms we take for granted aren’t available to them. No walls in the park, no little league games, no eating out....
No one realistically thinks vandalism is ok. I do think we could do much better at holding people accountable. 10 years of a life is a huge chunk of a persons timeline. For a party that signed the First Step Act, we need to stand behind our commitment to criminal justice reform
