Today in #hillfortsWednesday we will tell a story about how hillforts turned into castles. In this thread we travel to Portomeiro (Val do Dubra, #Galicia), to embedded ourselves in a brand new archaeological project of the Síncrisis research group of the @UniversidadeUSC. Go! 👇
Let me introduce Dr. José Carlos Sánchez Pardo. He will guide us over the impressive landscape of the enigmatic Castelo de Portomeiro, a place between Late Antiquity and Early Middle Age. First, why don't we climb a rock and fly over the site? #HillfortsWednesday
So, in this eagle's nest, the remains are so extremely well preserved. Take a look to this impressive gate, which still stands (at least partially). #HillfortsWednesday
Now it is your turn to explore the gate. With my smartphone I took a photogrametry of the trench to let you explore at your pleasure. Then, follow me inside the castle. https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/porta-do-castelo-de-portomeiro-6de3091bca2d42fd8afa7529bbe4c7e7 #HillfortsWednesday
Let's go to another trench. Archaeologist are digging in a huge rectangular building. And here's some evidence of the long-term use of the site, coming from the old tradition of hillforts and creating something new. #HillfortsWednesday
The features at the Castelo de Portomeiro are some kind of missing link between the urbanism of Galaicoroman hillforts and the medieval castles, occupied for two times. Take an aerial look to the trench and the today's visible remains (without digging!) #HillfortsWednesday
Archaeologist found a lot of pottery dating probably from VIII-IX century. This is a very unknown time for Galician history, but also is the age where all began. Take a look to the south, beyond those hills. Legend and history were born at the same time! #HillfortsWednesday
At the beginning of the 9th century, the tomb of the apostle Saint James was 'discovered' only 10 km away. The great pilgrimage of medieval Western Europe began and Santiago, the most powerful town of the Iberian West and head of Galician kingdom was born. #hillfortswednesday
Local community of Portomeiro preserved a lot of stories. The first is astonishing: "the hill was occupied twice". It matches with the archaeological evidences! Elders also tell that the castle was destroyed by an army coming from Santiago in old times. Remembering real struggle?
There's still a lot of work to do and tons of questions to answer in Portomeiro hillfort. But the team is excited about uncover an unknown time, where everything changed. (Drone images: @costagarcia_jm). #hillfortswednesday
