MAHOMET A THREAD. Hey y'all, just wanted to share my opinion on the current shitstorm that is occurring in Mahomet and across the country. As you know I’m a senior at MSHS and have already spoken to the school board about a few of these concerns. 1/?
The reason I am making this thread is because I am seeing a common problem of narcissism between all of these common problems from prom, to blackface, to the school board's inaction on the proposed antiracism measure. 2/30
DISCLAIMER: I will not be calling anyone a racist, or shame any of their actions; not because I don’t believe it isn’t warranted, but because that's not the most effective way of communicating the message to the people I want to reach 3/30
This thread will examine three ‘case studies’ in our local community, and how they are indicative of a larger problem that is very unique to the United States, and most common in white suburban areas such as Mahomet. This problem is Individualism. 4/30
Part 1: The Prom 😳. I am sure everyone has heard by now that there was a basement prom in Mahomet which 40+ people attended (during a pandemic) and ended up infecting more than 6 local businesses with the coronavirus. 5/30
What some people may not know is that many of the attendees unequivocally said on social media that they would ‘do it all again’ if given the opportunity. THAT PART IS THE PROBLEM. 6/30
I'm not gonna act like I am exempt from scrutiny here, I have been to many protests recently with large gatherings of people, however the point is that as human beings we should care for one another, and own up to our actions when we infect other people with a deadly disease.7/30
Also wear a damn mask, it's not that hard 8/30
The reason they didn’t own up to their mistakes is because our society places too much weight on individualism and not enough weight on collectivism. 9/30
They were too worried about being seen as the ‘bad apples’ rather than seeing our community as a whole as collective where if one succeeds, we all do (and subsequently if one makes a mistake we all do). 10/30
“The prom 😳” as a whole is a prime example of the lack of empathy we have today. “I am missing MY senior prom” (as if other people don’t have to sacrifice shit as well). 11/30
Part 2: Goddamnit, ya did a racism 😐😐. I think most people that follow my TL know I am VERY left leaning, so understand when I attack both sides here, I am not equivocating--I am demonstrating how this problem has plagued everyone here. 12/30
For the uninformed out there, a few girls from Mahomet did blackface. It wasn’t ‘maybe blackface’ it wasn’t ‘yellowface 🙄’ it was blackface. NOW HERE IS THE POINT, it doesn’t matter if you meant to or not, you DID blackface which IS racist. 13/30
You are not a racist person but that is not the point. Your actions hurt people of color, and that is the problem. As a community we need to take the initiative to educate our fellow members. 14/30
I see allies of BLM attack her personally and try to get her kicked off the cheer team?? Are u fucking insane? That is not going to do anything but radicalize her from an uneducated, privileged, white girl, to a full on right wing reactionary. 15/30
Don’t get me wrong, she deserves to face serious consequences for her actions, but this is really on US as a school for not teaching students enough about this topic (mfs literally out here wearing confederate flags) 16/30
Don’t call her a racist, she was clearly not taught the problems of blackface in school--THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Both the left and the right are focusing on whether this tik tok girl is a racist, which not the point !! 17/30
We need to teach black history on a community wide level at the school system, so that we can succeed AS A COMMUNITY. 18/30
The girl who did it needs to apologize for her actions (she has), show that she has studied these things (has she?), and maybe even donate to the SPLC or other groups that actively fight against hate crimes (many of which are caused by racist behavior like blackface) 19/30
She is not an individual racist and should not be kicked off the cheer team, she is an ignorant fucking high school sophomore that we should take responsibility for as a community since she reflects many of us. 20/30
Part 3: our local politicians officials 🤮. 21/30
I think most people that attended the Mahomet BLM rally visibly cringed when the police chief said “communities aren’t racist, people are” Dawg you just don’t understand why we are here do you? 😂 22/30
Systemic racism is LITERALLY THE CAUSE of all of these protests. its not about YOU or whether YOU are racist, its about your department’s actions and how they affect people of color (spoiler alert: Not gr8). 23/30
After I spoke in favor of the antiracism measure on the school board 3 members said we should focus on ‘family values’ not systemic racism. Heres a family for you, the family of your neighbors. 24/30
They are people of color and white people, gay and straight alike, we need to succeed as a community so don’t give me that individualism bullshit (yes YOU MAX MCOMB and Mike Metzler) 25/30
YOU are NOT the problem, the individualism you promote IS. in the spirit of collectivism our community is the problem so lets fix it through education. 26/30
Thanks for getting to the bottom here, donate to the SPLC who are tackling hate crimes as we speak. Let's fix this together as a community through education, starting with the antiracism measure. 27/30
It isn’t about “a few bad apples” that killed George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, it is a systemic problem of racist policing that killed them and many more, that has roots in the founding of this country. 28/30
Very few police I’ve met are bad people, however all cops as a collective are bad because the government using violence against its own people to enforce unjust laws is evil. Individualism isn’t what matters, their actions as a collective do. 29/30
