Translation of Tokyo Governor's Press Conference at 5PM, 2 Jul (given the more than 100 new cases on the day):
- 27.1 untraceable cases in seven days average; 158.4% increase of the new cases, which means disease is spreading
- Number of hospitalised patients is increasing;
(cont.)
- Capacity of medical facilities is 'level 2' out of four phases. Need alert on the expansion of the disease
- 70% of the new cases in the last 7 days are 20s and 30s.
- 40% of the new cases come from nightclubs, but not limited to.
(cont.)
- Infection increased among young people who had parties with friends. Many cases are asymptomatic.
- Nightclubs: particularly in Shinjuku and Ikebukuro areas, EXCEPT those which follow the guideline
(cont.)
- Request shops to follow the guideline, including having staff members take test
- We are now on alert of the expansion of infection
(Experts comment)
- Untraceable cases are on the rise, which suggests the cases are increasing.
- If this trend goes on, we'll have x6 untraceable cases after four weeks.
(Experts comment re the preparedness of medical facilities)
- Emergency medical care is stable at this moment
- 271 cases in hospitals. Slightly on the rise
- Number of arrangement of hospitalisation (including hotels) is slightly increasing
(cont.)
- Serious cases are decreasing due to most of the cases are younger generation.
(Q&A Session with journalists)
(Q. Comment on more than 100 cases after 2 months? Is this the '2nd wave'?)
- Today we had 107 new cases, which is a lot. More cases among younger generation, and together with nightclubs, parties are becoming the source of infection.
(cont.)
- We'll have more cases but we'd like to encourage people to take tests as early as possible
- '2nd wave', let's ask the experts for their view, but this trend is worrisome.
- 'Request' is just a request but important not to stop business
(cont.)
(Q. If this trends goes on, when will the situation goes over the capacity of medical infrastructure?)
- (Med. expert) Difficult to answer, but for example, if trends goes on, there'll be 960 new cases after 4 weeks while Tokyo has now 1,000 beds available.
(cont.)
- (Med. expert) Currently we have younger patients, but if the patients' generation goes higher, situation will vary. In particular, if infection spreads, more higher generation will be also affected.
(cont.)
... thus more serious cases.
(Q. Any analysis of spike of the cases?)
- Need further study.
(Q. How about request of 'closure'?)
- We are asking to follow the Guideline we have provided. Closing aren't preferable as many believes, and if you really wish to avoid such a situation, please follow the guideline
(Q. You've asked to refrain from going to downtown, and does that mean izakayas and parties, too?)
- Classification of the shops and restaurants doesn't apply as it was created under the state of emergency.
(Q. Any requests to the Government and neighbouring prefectures?)
- Already requested the border control to the Government.
- Re the neighbouring prefs, I've just discussed with the neighbouring governors, and shared concerns. Will work closely with them.
