Doing a little thread as to why I think Never Trumpers won't return to the GOP fold easily. So many on this site are convinced that everything will reset itself to the way it was before 2015 but let me tell you this as somebody who's lived around ppl who were once open to....
Voting GOP as well as having many family members who voted for either Reagan, both Bushes, Wilson and Arnie at some point if not all of them. Many of the CA based GOP staffers like Wallace and Schmidt spent a decade before Trump trying to reform the party and tried thru tears....
Sweat and blood to convince everyone that they had to reform or they were gonna die. Instead of reforming the GOP gave us the tea party and Trump. Trump was the final straw for so many who had once been even childhood Reagan supporters back in the day, the frustrations on the....
Doorstep that boiled over when Trump won abt the party being dated, unappealing, lacking a heart and being full of nutcases were there to be exploited by the right dem back in 2011-14 during my doorknocking days. A lot of undecideds downballot were already voting for Obama in....
The spring/summer of 2012. I'll never forget what I heard on the doorstep in places like Folsom, Thousand Oaks and La Jolla back then. At least a handful of ppl who said they were registered GOP said that they were voting for Brownley when I was doorknocking in Camarillo the....
Weekend after Todd Akin's infamous "legitimate rape" comment and that was both men and women. These communities and the strategists they spawned are aspirational, patriotic, civil and welcoming. The never Trumpers never accepted Trump when so many would because he was the straw..
That broke the camel's back for so many. Also once you break someone's partisan loyalty you got to work hard to earn it back and the GOP doesn't know how to work hard, especially not now. Also I follow what's happened internationally to another party in power during Iraq and....
The recession and removed from power not long after aka UK Labour, after a decade of self harm they're still consistently trailing the most incompetent PM in UK history. The GOP under Trump screwed up worse than Corbyn ever did by one critical difference, being in power....
And with power comes responsibility and down the line a record. Also Biden isn't Boris Johnson in any way shape or form and if UK Labour is struggling to get on it's feet against an incompetent PM when they were never near power under Corbyn I dare not wonder how the GOP looks...
Out of power a year from now with an inoffensive president against a backdrop of likely not only being in the minority in Washington on all levels but likely w/o a goal similar to 2010 in that they don't have redistricting or rural seats as a hail mary this time round.....
Also not only is David Koch dead but Rove is a decade older and more irrelevant. All of the smart heads that won elections have left the GOP for good. None of the nerds and election victors with the exception of Alastair Campbell left Labour under Corbyn. Many could have but....
Chose to stay out of love. There is no such love in Trump's GOP and there isn't anybody who can step up and say "enough" after all this. Many in the GOP will be wondering if a trifecta is in place on January 21 what the hell happened with their heads spinning after so much denial
Last but not least the patriotic majority that is the new dem coalition of a diverse group of Americans who represent all backgrounds and opinions united by one thing, the most powerful emotion ever aka love and love for what? Love for the country to which they believe can do....
So much better than this and know it can. This newfound unity between ppl who would have been rivals 5 years ago will outlast Trump for a long time if dems stay sane. 2010 IMO was a last grasp for the old guard and for taking white rural seats from dems, don't see the same in 22
And that in so many ways will matter given that the GOP has yet to learn what alienating everyone who isn't old and lives in the middle of nowhere means and has become a historical reenactment society in the few states it has severely lost ground in. Only a few skilled pols like.
Larry Hogan, Chris Sununu, Charlie Baker and Phil Scott have bucked this trend in the last decade. Not to say dems have their own issues with winning in certain states (Florida) but the truth is that once the GOP loses a place it doesn't come back and they knew that in 2010......
This time however dems are older, wiser and with less white rural overhang. To say the GOP won't win fair maps that likely will be drawn in the next decade as dems have more leverage in certain places in 2010 is an understatement. Fair maps decimated the GOP here after 2010 as...
they couldn't ask a friend in the lege to draw them a seat and in seats they had a hypothetical chance in like CA-24 and 47 they didn't even try. I doubt dems try to gerrymander this time round in the few states they have control of the process and even so increased dem leverage.
In redder states is more likely to produce dem gains than any gerrymander could dream of.
