I expect this is going to get a lot of traction in the college baseball sphere https://twitter.com/novy_williams/status/1278748607001346051
What I think is missing is an acknowledgement or further examination of why the board in the lead anecdote didn't want to hear a plan of adding sports to raise revenue, but rather just wanted to cut the budget.
And I think that's particularly relevant now. You have people that see how big athletic budgets are relative to other departments and they want everyone to go through the same austerity.
So, even if long-term getting more partial-scholarship athletes is a positive, it's a big negative in optics today.

And so you then have ADs that are told to cut budgets and that leads to sports being cut so that they can say they trimmed the budget by X percent.
I think it takes a special kind of board, president and AD to see how starting a program today would be beneficial.

Not to say they would wrong, but if the whole school is cutting (like an Akron is) but athletics is adding, that's going to ruffle feathers.
