I think every data journalist who tracks this pandemic is with me on this:
It is utterly exhausting explaining and shooting down the same misinformed arguments related to this virus over and over again.
We've done stories on these things. Everyone has done stories on this.

Cases, hospitalizations, deaths, all on the rise.
It's not an increase in testing.
Hospitalization increase is not due to elective surgeries.
It's not only old people who are dying.
Yes, children can get COVID and pass COVID to others.
Yes, masks help prevent the spread.

I understand that the response to the pandemic is incredibly politicized.
But I promise you, journalists are not "hiding" positive data on this virus to make politicians look bad.
The data IS bad!

I helped write a story saying Harris county stats were looking good back in May.
Clearly, that did NOT last. Same numbers now show the county is NOT looking good.
No journalist has time to try to spin this stuff in a political direction. We're all barely treading water here.

In related news, I don't know how politics reporters do this stuff every day.
There's not a secret or unknown data source that will magically make all this ok or not as bad as it looks.
There's not a mathematical formula or statistical technique I can do that will suddenly show that we're crushing the virus.

It's like Humpty Dumpty ya'll. No amount of numbers will put the world back to where it was.
I can't do a query that will tell you it's ok to go out and have fun, enjoy company of friends and loved ones because there's no risk.
This sucks. I'm sorry. Stay safe.
