Being an academic who is devoted to teaching but publishes very little - yet is more insightful than many who publish a lot - is no longer a path that is allowed in academia. Much to the impoverishment of students and colleagues alike. https://twitter.com/philosophybites/status/1281351676998430722
Many of us are lucky enough to have had some such figure inspire and encourage us in our own academic careers. People who do philosophy through an intense commitment to teaching and discussion, not writing. Like Socrates.
Not having a large body of written work of their own to defend, such individuals often make the best academic interlocutors. They can more easily enter into genuine discussion that is sensitive to others’ point of view.
