I wrote a PhD thesis on #implicitbias in healthcare and I think this is a bad idea... https://twitter.com/phil_lewis_/status/1281253007196401666
Bias training can be helpful, and can lead to behavioural and systemic change. However, mandating bias training without addressing policy will lead to more harm than good.
Don’t get me wrong, I regularly conduct trainings and think training is great, however most of the training out there is not grounded in empirical research and is touted as a panacea when it is only part of the solution. But it sure does make diversity consultants a lot of money.
Mandating bias trainings is popular among organizations and leaders seeking boxes to check and quick fixes. I’m sorry folks, it’s just not that easy.
If politicians want to address systemic racism in a meaningful and sustainable way then the they should roll up their sleeves and change policy. They should co-design policy change with BIPOC communities and focus on what works instead of what scores them political points.
