Was reading a book on translation that went over subtitling and dubbing before mentioning something I’d never heard of before: lectoring. Sounds like an interesting approach to exporting foreign shows. I can’t imagine it would work well with anime, but the idea is very amusing.
Lectoring being particularly for people who find “the original language endowed with prestige” exudes some serious weeb energy. It’s like the dubbed version of “literal subtitles”, for ppl who want to experience “the original” but can’t understand it by themselves.
Okay, @JulieYBM made me aware this happened with DBZ in Polish and sure enough a YouTube search pulled up the French dub with Polish lectoring! Fascinating to hear. I can see how it makes a good learning tool, but only if you’ve seen it once before.
I gotta admit though I’m a little disappointing Gohan’s shouting isn’t immediately followed by a deadpan mimic in the lectoring hahaha
