1. Sunil Gavaskar wasted no time in making an impact in international cricket. He handed a Test debut against West Indies on the 1970-71 tour of the Caribbean, Gavaskar scored a record 774 runs in his maiden Test series, still the highest aggregate by a player in his debut series
2. Such was Gavaskar’s fondness for the West Indies that he scored 13 centuries in 27 Test matches against the men from the Caribbean. Only one player had scored more hundreds against a particular opponent – Sir Don Bradman against England.
3. Even today, Gavaskar’s numbers as an opener (9607 runs and 33 hundreds) are the second-most by an opening batsman in Test cricket, bettered only by England’s Alastair Cook.
4. Sunil Gavaskar’s 220 at age 21 years and 277 days against the West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval in 1971 made him the youngest double centurion in an overseas Test. He broke the earlier record of Don Bradman, who was 21 years and 304 days when scored 254 against England in 1930.
5. Sunil Gavaskar is first of the two batsmen to score centuries in each innings of a test thrice, Ricky Ponting is the other one. But unlike Ponting, one of Gavaskar's twin centuries in a test was a double century.
6. Sunil Gavaskar is the first to score 1000 runs or more in a calendar year on 4 occasions. Since then, Tendulkar has passed the four figure mark in six calendar years, while Lara, Hayden, Kallis and Ponting have achieved the feat in 5 calendar years each.
7. Sunil Gavaskar is the first of three Indians to carry his bat throughout the innings when he stood defiantly scoring 127 against Imran Khan and the Pakistan bowling line up. Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid later accomplished the feat against Sri Lanka and England respectively
8. Sunil Gavaskar is the first batsman in test history to score 30 hundreds, he scored 34 in all, which has since been better only by 5 batsmen - Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, Ricky ponting, Rahul Dravid and Kumar Sangakkara
9. Sunil Gavaskar remains the first and only batsman to score a double century in the first, second, third, and fourth inning of tests.
