My 2019 report “Slums of the future” into flats created by existing Govt-imposed planning loopholes found:

🏡 London has missed out on 5500 affordable homes
🏢 59% are below minimum space standards
📦 the smallest is just 10m²

This is worsening the housing crisis not solving it https://twitter.com/insidehousing/status/1281480036239831042
The report I published into permitted development rights is here. It includes examples of some of the poorly-designed micro flats that have been created from offices.

Got a strong local plan? Tough! There’s nothing your council can do to stop these https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/slums-of-the-future-permitted-development-conversions-in-london-by-tom-copley-am.pdf
Hounslow council refused permission for this stack of boxes in 2015 (note the bed comes down from the ceiling). The developer appealed and the council’s decision was overturned.

These are just 20m². You’ll be seeing a lot more of this soon if ministers get their way
These flats in Lambeth are a relatively palatial 27.5m² (minimum space standard for a studio flat is 37m²).

You’ll pay £1,343 per month for the privilege of being crammed into this box.
