I have unapologetically been very critical of US universities and professors about China for a couple of very straight forward reasons. First, professors know or should know very clearly what is happening in China and Xinjiang. These are some of the people that know the best 1/n
This group of people have no excuse to be unaware or not know. Second, universities and professors near absolute inaction and defense of their inaction or ignorance is stunning. Let me break it down for you: no matter what university you work at you are on a targeting list 2/n
in China. Your labs have been targeted. Your computer networks have been targeted. CCP is monitoring your campus. Your professors are taking Chinese money. On and on with some combination and more and yet professors and universities continue to pretend this is just made up 3/n
If you took any of these actions seriously, it would be easier give weight to your opinions about the broader issues. Now you just sound utterly clueless about who you are dealing with. Third, these issues cut directly to heart of what you supposedly stand for but through 4/n
your inaction on anything you reveal yourself to be devoid of substance. You stand for academic openness? Great. Professors are being arrested in China for anything. Great, do you know who is reporting on Chinese students back to the local consulate about your university? 5/n
You're against racial oppression? Great, then reconsider your links with China over Xinjiang. You can't do nothing and consider yourself doing something. Fourth, you're giant hypocrites. I support universities in the US filing suit seeking to overturn online student visa 6/n
Requirement. Maybe your only question to Chinese students shouldn't be did the check clear. Trust me ain't that hard to find corrupt funds filtered through offshore shell companies being sent to US universities. You guys are ethically consistent as Apple and that ain't good 7/n
The major problem here is that universities and professors screaming racism for absolutely every problem linked to China and doing nothing is it removes you from any real discussion about policy solutions. Universities are pretending these problems don't exist and so others 8/n
with different motivations and interests are driving discussion. I am 100% pro-international student in any higher education environment. I've done that my entire career in higher education. I've lived it. It is however pure fantasy to pretend these problems do not exist 9/n
China has databases of professors, intellectual property, that target people and institutions that are both foreign and Chinese nationals. US universities and professors need to stop virtue signaling their wokeness and get ahead of this problem or they won't like the outcomes.
