RIP Jack Charlton
Jacko's Army. This fantastic Roddy Doyle piece on Ireland's Italia 90 adventure was his contribution to the "My Favourite Year" collection of football writing.

There will be few scrappier games ever played at a World Cup finals than the England v Ireland opening game, with Gary Lineker and Kevin Sheedy scoring the goals. Yet what a tournament it became for both countries, with Ireland v Romania and Italy, and England's knock-out games
I was supporting England in Italia 90. But Ireland as a second team in their other games. So I was glad when England took the lead through Lineker. Yet I was pleased for Ireland - because Kevin Sheedy scored it & also (club v country) because Steve McMahon slipped to let him in!
Jack Charlton is a month short of his 30th birthday when he makes his England debut in April 1965, in this dramatic Home Championship game with Scotland. He wins 35 caps, retiring after Mexico '70, where he played in one group game, against the Czechs
Charlton made his Leeds debut, at 17, in final game of 1952-53 season, before 2 years national service with the Household Cavalry. So he played just once for Leeds in 1954-55. A first team regular from 1955 to 1973, he played 773 games for Leeds in all https://twitter.com/HCav1660/status/1281906456829329414
