I think what bothers me about Nick Cannon being fired is that this isn’t the way Jews would’ve handled the situation if it were up to us, probably?

I mean, viacom has its own goals, but typically in these situations Jews are uncomfortable with a beloved figure being punished.
I mean, unless this is someone who has done the same thing repeatedly and refused to learn.

Then, yes, we’re pretty happy to call for the person to lose their job.

Or if they’re violent or pose a threat, etc.
the usual pattern is

1. person says antisemitic thing

2. Jews censure them & invite them to apologize & come learn

3. person accepts the invitation & issues initial apology

4. Jews give lots of homework & request some kind of additional public statement

5. person does it
there are exceptions, of course. someone in a position w/ a lot of authority can’t just make an apology and that’s that. we worry about people w/ power over important decisions, sometimes even life & death decisions. but.
generally, we’re this tiny minority in a community. we can’t afford a lot of bad blood.

the best thing is for everyone to walk away feeling like it’s okay for all the jews in the town to survive, you see what i’m saying?
moreover, our own approach to interpersonal wrongdoing tends to focus on letting a person repair harm as best they can rather than letting wounds fester.
i’m not saying my heart’s bleeding for NC. i get that he’s wealthy, doesn’t need the gig, and holds some very grim ideas about me b/c i’m a jew.

i’m actually more concerned for the other people being harmed by the situation, that i think the firing exacerbates.
and now it seems as if he is making teshuva. i’m not interested in christian conservatives “canceling” Nick Cannon on our behalf, thanks anyway—we handle things our way.
