Hackers & Vaccines, we're missing the point [THREAD
]: this reflects a *remarkable* failure of the global system of innovation. Amidst a pandemic, an effective ecosystem would encourage collaboration toward public good, but instead promise of monopolies driving opposite... https://twitter.com/NPRHealth/status/1284091620233625600

Hacking instead of collaborating=>system not incentivizing what we need. See @JosephEStiglitz: restricting use of knowledge is always inefficient, only OK if necessary for innovation, but poorly designed patent syst is impeding innovation instead. https://www.timesnownews.com/india/article/exclusive-america-has-been-afflicted-by-an-ideology-that-doesn-t-work-joseph-stiglitz/221977 /2
Aren't we also misrepresenting what drives scientists? Most I know moved by excitement, discovery, profile, peer acclaim, not sales monopoly.
e.g. I don’t know Gilbert, but profile of work Ebola->COVID doesn’t suggest she’s in it for exclusive right. /3 https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2020-07-15/oxford-s-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-coronavirus-front-runner

And the promise of monopolies are driving really harmful waste of resources, time, and political attention.
e.g., the US government trying to convince a Germany company to move to the US. /4 https://twitter.com/DeanBaker13/status/1239371327191973890?s=20

With massive funding to vaccines, instead of focusing ALL efforts on creating truly public good, available to all, manufacturing enough, we get vaccine nationalism. Even the best efforts are contorting to work around monopolies imposed BY OUR GOVTs/5 https://www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/news/covax-facility-covid-vaccines-access/
There is plenty of smart thinking on this from North and South like

...and campaigns like @FixPatentLaw in South Africa/7

... but overall #COVID19 lesson has to be: global system of innovation needs massive & urgent overhaul. It’s costing lives in high and low income countries alike. Have to believe we could build a system to incentivize collaboration and faster progress... instead of hacking./8
