I came in as a 17 year old freshman and one of my first classes required final was a 25 page paper. My highschool never required us to write more than 7 pages double spaced. Other students had already completed full scale research in hs. The playing field isn’t equal.
Remote learning does not take into account that many public school students struggle with ADHD or other blockades to be able to focus. And while we’re home we don’t have access to the environment/resources that helped us overcome those struggles in the pass.
So the unequal playing field we came in with makes a comeback when we’re taken from the environments we’ve trained ourselves to be able to focus in.
Follow me :) I sh*t post about education & racism, colleges and the experiences of Black Students/First Gen & Low-Income, critiques of the horrendous thing that is the U.S. and other somewhat interesting stuff đź’«
I went to Rice University & was the BSA President there but I’m transferring out to go to a Liberal arts college to focus more on developing as a thinker! I study sociology, & Black intellectual thought! I post a lot about the college experience in general and youth radicalism✨
Ppl are askn abt my major and while I am a sociology major it doesn’t matter. STEM students face struggles with professors who assume everyone already has figured out the basis of Calculus or Chemistry etc. overall the transition from HS 2 college needs to be improved for all
As a 1st gen low-income student myself a lot of us are struggling right now due to job layoffs, covid-19 and college financial burdens. Houseless/Housing insecure/ financially unstable College students Please feel free to drop your Venmo or Cashapps✨ Trans/Queer/Black folks too
Lastly, all the incoming freshmen who are scared please kno that your fear is valid but also let it motivate you if you can. Find mentors who have been through it, follow ppl on social media who give REAL college advice and insights and be patient with yourselves! Hope y’all ok!
while this has your eye I hope everyone reflects on how inequities in education are tied to anti-Blackness through school segregation, defunding, and Whitewashed curriculums among many other factors. as a result many Black & Brown college students struggle compared to others.
Lol I wrote the paper on Policing, Mass Incarceration and Foucault’s Biopolitics! It’s 28 pages. I was one of the only freshmen in the class and I got an A on it!! Also the professor became a mentor bc he said I had ~~Potential~~. Who you know!!
Literally no one trains us on citation practices, how to format papers, prose for a college level essay etc. I would go to easybib and just look up whatever articles I could find and just plug it in at the bottom of my papers. The other students were using endnotes and evrythng!
