Ondřej Kolář is a 25-year-old goalkeeper from the Czech Republic who currently plays for the Czech champions, Slavia Prague. He was named the Player Of The Season for the 2019/20 campaign, earning over twice as many points as ex-teammate Tomáš Souček.
His actual stats for the season is where it starts to get insane. Ondřej Kolář played 31 league games this season, conceding only 10 goals and breaking the league's clean sheet record with an incredible 23 clean sheets. Those numbers sound fictional even for the Czech League.
In Fall, Kolář also participated in the UCL group stage with Slavia Prague which was drawn into the "Group of Death" along with Barcelona, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund. Although Slavia ended their journey with only 2 points, the side and especially Kolář received praise.
In 6 UCL games, Kolář conceded 10 goals and kept one clean sheet. This clean sheet came in one of his best career performances at the Camp Nou. He caught all 6 shots he faced and became the first goalkeeper to prevent Barcelona scoring at their stadium since February 2018.
His performance in this game was notably praised by Marc Andre Ter Stegen, who when talking to Kolář after the match, told him he "hadn't seen such a good goalkeeping performance for a long time".
Here are some of Kolář's best saves from this game.
Last season, Kolář was also a vital part of Slavia's sensational Europa League journey, where the Czech side beat teams such as Bordeaux, Zenit and Sevilla before being knocked out 3-5 on aggregate by competition winners Chelsea in the quarterfinals.
Now onto the stats. In the 6 Champions League games, Kolář had a save percentage of 72%, a solid number considering the opposition he was up against.
One of Kolář's biggest strengths is his distribution, emphasised by his 76% overall pass completion in the Champions League, and 88% pass completion counting passes in own half. Here is an example of Kolář keeping his cool on the ball against Achraf Hakimi of Borussia Dortmund:
Overall, Ondřej Kolář is a great all-rounded goalkeeper, with no real significant weakness. His shot-stopping as well as on the ball play is more than good enough for a top 5 league, and eventhough he has just recently signed a new contract, the players himself has admitted to
eventually wanting to play in a better league. With Tomáš Souček enjoying a successful spell at West Ham, it has been proved that even a player from a worse league can make it in a top league like the Premier League as long as they really are good enough.
Kolář's market value is currently listed as €6mil on Transfermarkt but it is likely Slavia would want a sum much bigger than that if they were to sell their star man.
