Been thinking a lot about how the Gerasene demoniac acts out the aggression he must sense the rest of the town would like to visit upon him. They don’t have to do the work of stoning him, because he does it himself.
In fact they can even chain him up amidst the tombs and feel like they’re being compassionate because, look, now he can’t bruise himself with stones! Aren’t we swell!
I sense that a lot of us gay Christians whatever side we happen to be on now have spent a lifetime inflicting wounds on ourselves that we figured we deserved because of how our churches looked at us
And then sometimes the church rushes in and chains us up and feels better about itself because now we can’t hurt ourselves. But we’re still not really allowed to live. We have to stay out there among the dead.
And our initial reaction to Jesus coming in is one of terror: “Do not torment me!”
We’re so convinced that we deserve the bruises and chains, that we belong in the tomb long before we’ve had a chance to live, so that the approach of Life itself inspires the horror as of death.

It’s so hard to step out of that way we were told to think about ourselves because it’s how we were raised.
And so it is pure joy to see my siblings, Side A or B, when they find themselves clothed and in their right minds, realizing their belovedness in all their beloved mess.

It is a miracle not to be believed! And yet it is our job to tell everyone what Jesus has done for us! That God’s justice does not chain us up so that we can’t hurt ourselves, but for freedom sets us free, and comes running to bring us home when we inevitably get ourselves lost.
Anyways maybe it’s just the espresso talking but I have so much hope.
