1/ On #PortlandProtests & DHS presence: let's make it clear that Portland is NOT a testing ground; for years, immigrants in this country have been subject to unidentified agents, arrests that look like kidnappings, & unmarked vans.
4/ In early June, ICE confirmed that HSI agents would be deployed to protests across the country. Since, they've been spotted around NYC, both at police precincts & at protests. At an NYC protest in early June, HSI agents tackled and arrested a US citizen. https://twitter.com/ImmDefense/status/1268937547561959425
5/ Some of the tactics we see in Portland—aggressive, unexplained arrests that look like kidnappings by secret police—are the baseline for ICE arrests in immigrant communities.

Below, see officers refusing to answer questions in a 2018 courthouse arrest. https://bit.ly/3g0cDqs
7/ Just a few weeks later, ICE agents appeared outside a Bronx apartment, with an assault rifle. https://twitter.com/anniecorreal/status/1235237698660708355?lang=en
8/ This behavior by DHS has escalated in the last few years. In the clip below, also from 2018, officers storm around a Minnesota courthouse, refusing to show a warrant or identify themselves and threatening bystanders with criminal charges:
9/ In 2017, @ACLU_OR captured blatant profiling by ICE officers in plainclothes, driving unmarked minivans and asking immigrants for identification outside of a courthouse without identifying themselves:
10/ Quick courthouse-arrest-related aside:

Today would be a great day for the @NYSenate to get #ICEOutofCourts and pass the #ProtectOurCourts Act! Thank you @MichaelleSolage for leading its passage in the @NYAssembly and @Bradhoylman for leading the charge in the Senate!
11/ Ok, back to it: while these egregious tactics are coming to light just now, it's important to recognize that they've been employed against noncitizens FOR YEARS.

What we are seeing now is an expansion of these tactics and them being used on US citizens very publicly.
12/12 In light of this, please remember that regardless of immigration status, everyone has rights in encounters with ICE/HSI/CBP/DHS agents. Learn more about your rights when interacting with immigration agents at https://www.immigrantdefenseproject.org/infographics/
