☆ the story and production of the rolling stones’ “their satanic majesties request” - a thread! ☆
in this thread i’ll be talking about how the album was recorded and what was happening to the stones during this time! enjoy! <3
first off, the albums name is a play on “Her Brittanic Majesty Request and Requires” on the inside of UK passports!
this was the rolling stones’ FIRST self produced album since their producer, andrew loog oldham quit halfway through the recording sessions. mick said they wanted to make this album as wild as possible to piss off their producer. this album is made up of mostly recordings from
other sessions since the band barely worked during these sessions. they turned out to be more of hang outs rather than actual work. everyone would bring along their friends and barely any progress was made. usually there was no one at the studio, it was mostly b*ll who showed up.

the stones started recording on february, 9, 1967. three days later mick was arrested and charged for the possession of drugs, while keith was charged for allowing people to use his house to smoke weed. (legend behaviour) because of this, mick and keith
were in and out of court and jail, meaning they couldn’t show up to sessions very much of the time. keith said “none of us wanted to make [satanic majesties] but it was time for another stones album”
so with whatever recordings they had, they collected them and made them into songs. brian said “we hadn’t got anything put together” a month before the albums release date.
now the album was officially released on december 23 1967, being released near the end of psych-rocks peak. when it was, people saw it as a pretentious rip off attempt at the beatles sgt. peppers which was released 8 months before. obviously this wasn’t what the stones were
trying to do. it received mixed reviews as people weren’t sure if they liked the stones new sound. for this album, they experimented with many new sounds and effects including instruments like: mellotron, short wave radio static and a theremin, even including some african rhythms
there are several famous guest apperences on this album, first off jonesy helped with some of the string arrangements for “she’s a rainbow”, steve marriott and ronnie lane of small faces contributed to backing vocals on the song “in another land” lastly john and paul also sang
backing vocals but it was on the song “we love you” which didn’t make it on the album, but is on many of the stones’ compilation albums. (here’s paul in the studio with mick!)
now for the album cover, the stones got to create the set for the cover, they got to make all the props and set them up! here are some pictures of them doing so!
now michael cooper took the picture for the cover, and guess what! he also took the picture for sgt. peppers! the album cover is a lenticular image of the stones, it’s 2 pictures and you can see it by moving the record side to side.

FUN FACT:
during the satanic majesties shoot (not for the album cover), mick and keith were on acid and you can DEFINITELY tell they are 😼
over the years people have considered this album a sgt. peppers rip-off, but really the stones wanted to try something different and it just so happened to come out around the same time the beatles released their album. they are both very experimental psych-rock albums and both
deserve praise and shouldn’t be compared to each other because they’re both completely different! the majority of the similarities are that they were both released around the same time and are both psych-rock albums!
congrats! you made it to the end of the thread, thank you so much for reading and i hope you learned something today! ily <3
