484. Feels to me like Victoria is heading for a disaster. Appeals to the public to ‘do the right thing’ at daily press conferences aren't working (surprise). Adding mandatory masks from tomorrow is a blunt but worthwhile supplementary measure, but I doubt it'll be enough.
I really don't think Australia has the culture and infrastructure (yet?) to manage a suppression strategy. We need to aim for elimination while the problem is contained to Vic and NSW and knock this on its head while we work on measures like a proper, state-run quarantine program
We should also commision urgent qualitative research to understand what the barriers to people 'doing the right thing' are. Do they not understand? Do they not have sick leave? Do they think it's all hype? Do they just hate being told what to do?
Meanwhile, at a hospital and healthcare system level we still have lots of work to do. We aren't clear as to why so many healthcare workers are being infected and we aren't taking enough of a 'precautionary principle' approach to eliminate/minimise risk in the meantime, e.g. N95s
There are still lots of ways we could make better use of telehealth within hospitals (to minimise staff movement and transmission between staff and patients) and improve our contact tracing capacity – e.g. tracking staff movement during shifts. We need time and willpower.
