Teru Mikami is one of the most underrated anime and manga characters, so I would like to elaborate on why I think he is not only great, but also actually elevates Death Note. Mikami is introduced as someone Light choose to be Kira’s right hand man, in a way.
Mikami is shown to have a strong sense of justice and divine punishment, from his childhood. He cares about how people who thanked him were ok. But at the sam twine, it’s clear he is a bit extreme because he thinks his mother deserved to die, even though it’s clear she didn’t.
This leads to him becoming a prosecutor, so he can carry this out more. But it’s obvious his black and white distinctions of good and evil are not healthy, and they lead to his views being distorted. This is when Kira shows up, he thinks God has chosen him.
But eventually, things come crashing down when his “God” turns out to just be another man, capable of errors, who failed him. This, combined with his black and white views, and because this is all he has, destroys him. In both anime and manga he dies, betrayed by the world and life
In Death Note everyone loses, and in Mikami’s case, it’s a representation of how blind belief, religious belief, and even trying to just fight for what you believe in will destroy you in the end. And he dies without going to heaven or hell, because his life meant nothing in the end
