Thread: Filming/photographing/live-streaming at demonstrations. #seattleprotest #seattleprotests #seattleprotestcomms
First, I think it’s important to make a distribution between different types of demonstrations. There are marches. Pretty self explanatory. There are rally’s, again, self explanatory. There is direct action, kinda like tonight. And there are occupations, like The CHOP.
IMO it is appropriate to film the aftermath. That’s it. There should be no one in the crowd filming what’s taking place. Why was last Sunday so successful? Why have there been no arrests after the fact? No one filmed or streamed.
It’s important to note when and what is appropriate for each demonstration. More specifically, demonstrations of direct action.
That being said, if there is any sort of engagement with police. Film that shit. Everyone take their camera out and point it at police. That should be the only time videos are recorded.
At marches, rally’s, occupations, in my opinion, record/ photograph until your heart is content. I have found that asking the security on hand whether or not I can film is usually the best route. Sometimes that want to vet you, I would always expect that.
But seriously you guys, if you’re in a group, what is your reasoning for recording? Ask yourself that. Is it to just get clout on Twitter? Because then what are you really doing for the cause?
At the end of the day I think Omari’s presence tonight is a clear example of what I’m referring to here. Omari was present, as was Bobby. Neither were filming. We didn’t have to ask them not to.
