Nephi, Alma, and others repeatedly teach their people the importance of remembering the great blessings of the Lord to their ancestors - especially in leading them out of wicked Jerusalem to a land of promise.
This is actually pretty similar to the Law of Moses, which prescribed a large variety of different practices specifically to remind people of the captivity their ancestors had suffered, and how the Lord delivered them.
The scriptures record many instances of the Lord delivering the righteous from bondage, often in the form of an exodus. And almost every time, the prophets teach their people the importance of remembering those events and how the Lord blessed them.
The pioneers crossing the plains was our exodus. The Lord led our people from a city which was about to be destroyed into a place where we could flourish.
It's important to note too that we are taught to remember not only the heartwarming successes but also the failures, and the results of not following the Lord. Additionally, there are several times the scriptures identify not remembering these things as a symptom of wickedness.
Observing Pioneer Day isn't a commandment, but we do have an opportunity every July 24 to reflect on the struggles our forebears went through for their faith, and how the Lord supported and delivered them from their various forms of bondage.
