The fascist project is so well-planned that it took so much care to cater to all kinds of people. Its constituents are often made to look like a monolith in the liberal discourse but they are really not. They include all kinds of people and it is important to acknowledge this.
They attracted the conservative nationalists by gaslighting them about how their community, and by extension their nation, is in grave danger because of "the other". They constantly sold them lies because they knew that the confirmation bias will work in their favour.
For their more liberal-minded constituents, they brought in a more sophisticated discourse. They pointed at Hijab to paint the caricature of the oppressed Muslim woman and later passed a law in the Parliament to support that narrative. The liberal man found this very attractive.
The other topic they brought up was animal rights. They projected the Muslims as some kind of meat-eating barbarians who kill animals for their religion when the simple facts are that 70% of all Indians are non-vegetarians and animals are killed for food every day, Eid or not.
The conservative nationalists alone couldn't have won them the majority. It's their success in bringing Islamophobia into the liberal discourse that really did it for them. This is what makes it all the more important to call out the slightest forms of bigotry in that space.
