Everyone thinks we're not skeptical enough of drugs and I think we're not nearly skeptical enough of therapy

There are therapeutic modalities - whole schools of thought - from the goddamn 19th century that would've been banned for lack of evidence of efficacy if they were drugs https://twitter.com/DadTrans/status/1287332919472730113
I am not saying that there's no validity to complaints that the bar for approval and prescriptions for many drugs may be too low

I am saying the bar for therapy is so, so much lower
I am not saying there aren't any good therapists or that they have an easy job

I am saying that the way people talk about it they obviously think becoming a therapist is much harder than it is, and that therapists have way more regulatory oversight than they really do
And if you think me saying this makes me an anti-psych crank with an axe to grind then you're probably a fairly privileged person who's had the luxury to shop around for therapists and not a member of a marginalized group that's one way or another been forced into therapy
Honestly just one story about a young trans kid being forced to narrate to some creepy old dude "What do you think about when you masturbate" should be enough, never mind hundreds
Friendly reminder that Kenneth Zucker's clinic ran a study about the "correlation between attractiveness and dysphoria" where ADULT STRAIGHT MALE VOLUNTEERS LOOKED AT TOPLESS 12-YEAR-OLDS

AND JESSE SINGAL DEFENDED THIS MOTHERFUCKER FROM THE "ANTI-SCIENCE MOB"
